ASI Magazines Honored with Prestigious Folio and Neal Awards

Only industry publications to win coveted national awards

TREVOSE, PAFebruary 2, 2011 – The Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI) today announced its magazines were honored with four awards for excellence at the recent FOLIO: magazine 2010 Eddie & Ozzie Awards gala.

In addition, three ASI magazines were recently named finalists for Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards from American Business Media.

ASI magazines received the following FOLIO: awards:

Gold award for Best Single Article: Advantages, edited by Kathy Huston, for the July 2009 “Energize Your E-Mail,” which highlights the dos and don’ts of successful communications, including solutions to egregious and often humorous errors.

Silver award for Best Full Issue: Stitches, edited by Nicole Rollender. The May 2010 State of the Industry issue features survey results packaged in 11 information-laden how-to sections offering readers a step-by-step business-improvement guide.

Bronze award for Best Full Issue: Wearables, “The Style Issue,” edited by C.J. Mittica. The October 2009 issue features a high-end fashion shoot to show off the industry’s most stylish apparel, along with strategies on how distributors can become fashion experts.

Bronze award for Best Single Article: Stitches, for “Work of the Body,” written by Nicole Rollender. The December 2009 issue features 13 apparel designers/decorators who successfully push the limits of fashion and embroidery. This motivational cover story and artistic layout shows commercial embroiderers how to use their skills to create couture work.

FOLIO: awards, the largest competition for magazines, were handed out January 25 to a sold-out audience at Sentry Center in New York City. The annual awards recognize the best in editorial and design excellence.

This year, the awards drew more than 2,000 entries, which more than 100 expert judges spent weeks evaluating. ASI publications were honored among other business magazines like Inc., Entrepreneur, and Bloomberg BusinessWeek, as well as consumer magazines like Sports Illustrated and Travel + Leisure.

“We’re incredibly proud of our editorial department for once again ranking among the best of the best in a world-class competition,” said Rich Fairfield, ASI’s executive vice president and publisher. “Our writers, editors and designers consistently deliver quality magazines to our online and print readers, making our publications the go-to resource for the advertising specialty industry.”

The prestigious Neal awards are considered the Pulitzer Prize of business journalism. The nominations set a new record for ASI’s editorial department: the first time it’s been nominated for three Neals in a single year.

The nominations are for:

Best Single Article: Wearables, for Editor C.J. Mittica’s article, “From Seed to Shirt,” which details his 2,700-mile journey from Texas to Guatemala to show how organic clothing is made.

Best News Coverage: Supplier Global Resource, for Editor Michele Bell’s story, “Asia’s Seismic Shift,” on how labor unrest and other issues in China would affect industry suppliers.

Best Educational Content: Counselor State of the Industry issue, edited by Andy Cohen, which contains trend stories, how-to tips and profiles written by numerous staffers.

ASI publishes eight catalogs and five magazines – Advantages, Counselor, Stitches, Supplier Global Resource and Wearables – in addition to the Successful Promotions Trend Report e-newsletter. ASI publications have won 39 recent editorial awards, including three Jesse H. Neal Awards.
